2018 Are Honda Fits Easy to Steal

Best and Worst Honda Fit Years

The Honda Fit was sold in the U.S. for 14 years. We compare all model years to suggest the best option for you.

The Honda Fit has been around since 2007 and continues to rack up countless accolades from the automotive and consumer press. In 2019, the Fit helped Honda get recognized as the "Best Value in America" in the passenger car category by automotive analysis firm Vincentric.

Together with the overall passenger car award, the 2019 Honda Fit won in the subcompact hatchback category. Winners of the Vincentric awards are determined by a cost of ownership analysis that factors depreciation, fuel, and maintenance costs plus other factors.

Also in 2019, the Honda lineup was projected to retain its value over time the strongest after three years of ownership compared to any mainstream auto brand, according to J.D. Power's ALG Automotive Insights, which forecasts new vehicle depreciation.

In addition to Honda's recognition as the "Best Overall Mainstream Brand," the Honda Accord, Fit, Odyssey, and Pilot returned to ALG's list of Residual Value Awards, as these models led the pack within their segments.

Despite the Fit hatchback's many awards, Honda announced in 2020 that the model was being discontinued in America. The 2020 Honda Fit said goodbye while still continuing to offer decent fuel efficiency and innovative design features, such as the fuel tank mounted underneath the front-row seats, which gave the 2020 Fit extra cargo capacity, boasting a class-leading 52.7 cu. ft. of space with the rear seats folded down.

Standard features on all the more recent Fit models included rearview camera, liftgate spoiler, auto on-off headlights, LED taillights, Bluetooth, and a multi-function center console. Thus, the award-winning Honda Fit is a great option for car buyers looking for a reliable pre-owned hatchback.

Considering buying a used Honda Fit but concerned about where to start? There are a few things you should know about what has been the smallest vehicle offered from Honda for over a decade.

Honda Fit: First Generation (2007-2008)

Introduced in the American market for the 2007 model year, the Honda Fit was slated to take the place of the Civic hatchback as the small hatch in the U.S. market.

Going up against competitors like the now-defunct Dodge Caliber, Suzuki Reno, and Toyota Yaris, as well as the Hyundai Accent, Kia Rio5, and Nissan Versa, the 2007 Honda Fit was a strong competitor amongst its class of sub-compact hatchbacks. These vehicles were at their prominence in recent years thanks to fuel prices rising to over $3/gallon in the mid- to late 2000's.

Specifications of the first-generation Fit are a 1.5L VTEC four-cylinder engine producing 109 horsepower and 105 lb.-ft. of torque. Both manual and automatic transmissions were available, and the EPA rated them for 33 mpg city and 38 mpg highway with the manual transmission.

Perhaps the most unique feature of the Fit was not its engine or fuel economy, but the interesting ways the interior could be configured for such a small vehicle.

The miniature size may fool buyers on the outside as the interior can swallow up to 42 cu. ft. of gear with the back seats folded into "Utility Mode." Furthermore, the front seats could be reclined into what Honda dubbed "Refresh Mode," a nearly flat surface for a quick power nap in the parking lot.

Taking first place in a Car and Driver comparison test its first year on the market against six of its main competitors is certainly a way to make an entrance into a new market, as this generation of Honda Fit had been sold overseas since 2001 as the Honda Jazz, primarily.

Deciding that small cars should not be "penalty boxes," Car and Driver editors noted that the highpoints of the 2007 Honda Fit were its "classy interior, sporty handling, and being quick-witted in all its moves." In fact, they called it the go-kart of economobiles, high praise from a bunch of auto enthusiast journalists.

The praise did not stop there, Car and Driver named the Fit to its "10 Best" list a total of six years: 2007-2012. Vehicles that are new, significantly upgraded, or a previous year's winner are eligible for this award. The first generation also received the NHTSA's top five-star Safety rating.

The first generation did not last long, as the platform has existed worldwide since 2001, meaning 2007 and 2008 were the only model years for the short-lived first model.

Honda Fit: Second Generation (2009-2014)

The second-generation Honda Fit was focused on one thing: refinement. Already a sound competitor amongst its peers, the new 2009 model did it all better than before. Growing in nearly all dimensions, it was also roomier than before.

Cargo space jumped from the previous generation's 42 cu. ft. to an impressive 57.3 cu. ft. in the new model.

Continuing the theme of refinement, overall vehicle stiffness and ride quality were improved over the outgoing model. The new Fit maintained its go-kart-like reflexes to go with the new sleeker and sportier styling. Interior appointments were improved as well, replacing a car that had been eight model years globally, the upgraded interiors were welcomed by buyers for the 2009 model year.

New features like dual gloveboxes, USB inputs, and more outward visibility made the new Fit a better place to spend time.

Power is still created from a 1.5L VTEC four-cylinder engine, now producing 117 horsepower and 106 lb.-ft. of torque still mated to your choice of manual or automatic transmissions. The increased proportions of this new generation meant that fuel economy took a hit over the outgoing model, at 28/35/31 (city/hwy/combined) buyers paid the price at the pump for the new Fit's extra size.

As fuel prices began creeping over $4/gallon, keeping competitive fuel economy numbers was still vital for the car's success in the Honda lineup.

J.D. Power noted that the Pros for the new model were the amount of cargo capacity, the new gauge styling, and the transmission smoothness. The problem areas were the feel of the seat material, the quality of the interior materials, and the vehicle's overall ride.

2015 Honda Fit - Photo by Honda

Honda Fit: Third Generation (2015-2020)

The final generation to be sold in the U.S. began production for the 2015 model year, stealing styling from the biggest people mover in the Honda lineup, the Odyssey minivan.

The new model aimed to improve over the previous two generations with an even quicker, safer, and more fuel-efficient package than before.

Still using a 1.5L four-cylinder engine, the third-generation Honda Fit produced 130 horsepower and 114 lb.-ft. of torque.

Transmissions are either a six-speed manual or a continuously variable transmission (CVT) which is designed for better fuel economy over a typical automatic.

Fuel economy tops out at 33/41/36 mpg (city/hwy/combined) with that CVT being the most fuel-efficient choice in the LX trim.

The third-generation Fit's interior is perhaps the nicest of the nameplate's history. With ergonomic touches like a dash-mounted cupholder to the left of the steering wheel, in addition to the two mounted low in front of the shifter, Honda interior designers took advantage of every square inch of interior space.

Touchscreen infotainment, push-button ignition, and USB ports are just some of the modern amenities that buyers will find in this generation of Honda Fit.

Rear seat legroom was increased over the previous model, sacrificing rear cargo space behind those rear seats. (Check out the video below for a look at how the 2015 Honda Fit did on a challenging road test.)

Subcompact class cars are known for their cheaper materials and lack of technology and amenities, but Honda brings Honda Sensing safety features, if you opt for the CVT on the EX or EX-L models, as well as optional leather seats that can be heated.

Which Honda Fit Should You Buy/Avoid?

The biggest factor when looking at the recalls over the lifespan of the Honda Fit is the infamous Takata Airbag Recall. Affecting 2007-2014 model years, the Takata Airbag inflators are the main culprit behind the inflated recall numbers for the early generations of the Honda Fit.

Honda Fit Recalls by Model Year - Source NHTSA
Honda Fit Recalls by Model Year (Source: NHTSA)

If you do find a Honda Fit model that fits your needs but has an outstanding recall due to the Takata Airbag inflator unit, Honda will repair all parts and give owners a free one-day car rental if needed.

Beyond this issue, Honda's reputation for build quality and reliability holds up under scrutiny, with model years 2017, 2018, and 2020 all avoiding a single recall, as of the writing of this article.

Given the rise in popularity of SUVs and crossovers, it is no surprise that Honda has chosen not to sell the Fit in America for the 2021 model year. This gives buyers looking at the Honda Fit 14 model years from which to choose. (Check out the video below for a comprehensive look at the 2019 model year option.)

Recall issues aside, the best value appears to be the second generation, 2009 through 2014. Given the improvements in size, handling, and fuel-economy, paired with the natural depreciation of used vehicles, the second-generation Honda Fit falls into the high-value quadrant.

According to Consumer Reports, buyers could likely find a 2009-2014 model year Fit between $6,400 and $11,000. Ranked by many reviewers including Motor Trend as one of the most engaging to drive, the second-generation cars seem to be the best value and most entertaining to drive of all years.

Interior cargo volume is perhaps also the most usable for these model years as well, being the best mix of rear legroom and hatchback cargo storage. The overall safety of this vehicle also means it would be a good first car.

Honda's reputation for reliability should have buyers putting many miles on any year model they choose, but those miles will not be heavy on fuel usage as all generations of Fit sip the fuel. All years and trims averaged over 30mpg combined, meaning a Honda Fit of any generation will be a great value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Apr 9, 2022

What year Honda Fit is most reliable?

Based on reliability ratings for the best years for the Honda Fit are the 2009 through 2014 model years. This was technically the second generation for them and they had worked out a lot of the bugs that were present in the first generation. The year that has the lowest overall complaints is 2009.

The next best years are 2007 through 2008 when it was the first generation. There were some minor problems but they still had the legendary Honda reliability that can get them to 200,000 miles easily.

The third generation of the Fit released in 2015 scores the lowest on overall reliability. This typically is due to the inherent problems with CVT transmissions. They are a bit more fragile than a traditional automatic or manual transmission and that leads to more reported trips to mechanics or dealers than the earlier years.

How many years will a Honda Fit last?

A Honda Fit should have no problem lasting 13 to 20 years as long as you keep up with the scheduled maintenance on the vehicle. Keeping up with the maintenance is the most important thing you can do to help eliminate mechanical breakdown problems on any car.

Honda has been known for producing vehicles that are capable of reaching 200,000 miles easily and the Fit is no different. If you average 10,000 to 15,000 miles per year that gives you the range of 13 to 20 years until you reach 200,000 miles. That is not to say that all Honda Fits will have issues at 200,000 miles and that will be the end of their life. In most cases as long as you are willing to continue taking care of the car it should have no problem going even further. The Fit was first introduced in 2007 and there are plenty of 2007 models that are still on the road today in 2021.

Is Honda Fit a reliable car?

The Honda Fit is considered to be a very reliable car. The second generation is where Honda was really able to maximize their reliability ratings for the Fit. They were able to fix some of the issues that came up with the first generation, and it was before they made the move to CVT transmissions.

The third-generation Fit is still an extremely reliable vehicle, but the addition of the CVT transmission has been a downside for it. CVT transmissions are much more fragile than traditional transmissions. There are also not many CVT transmission rebuilders so when they fail they usually need to be replaced completely. This can lead to higher repair costs than a regular transmission.

I would still expect any new Fit to be able to go 250,000 miles with no serious problems as long as you take care of them. It is always a good idea to get your oil changed and have the rest of the components inspected by a mechanic at least twice a year.

2009 Fit Sport Manual

Bought a 2009 Fit sport with a 5 speed to replace my boring Prius for my 100 mile a day commute. I got it for $5k with 117k miles on it a year and a half ago, and it has 157k on it now. Things I replaced: Rear shocks, alternator, catalytic converter (cheap on ebay), breaks all around, A/C compressor. All told I put another $4k into it, but thats to be expected buying an older car. Now it runs like a champ. Pros: Decent gas mileage (34-36), slick shifting trans, handles great. CONS: No tech at all, this is the most bare bones car Honda makes. Crashy suspension, you hit a pothole and your mother feels it, don't buy it if your looking for a smooth riding car, slow. I frequently drive it from CT to NC and back over long weekends and it does fine. I even tow a small trailer to do light landscaping and haul my dirtbikes on.

2018 Honda Fit seems to be a mistake.

I drive 50 miles a day and was looking for a car good on gas. Saw the Fit and purchased it June 2018. I have loved it up till now. Got in the car and turned it on and all the warning lights came on and wouldn't go off. After going to two different dealers to look at it I was told it was miss firing. I have 12,000 miles on it. It has been in the shop 5 days now and they have replace the heads, fuel injectors and the fuel line and now I am told they are waiting to hear from Honda to get permission to flush the engine because there is to much carbon in it. Just really disappointed. Just really disappointed and afraid I made a mistake. If this is happening now what will happen in the future.

2017 Honda Fit is at the top of its class.

My 2017 Honda fit is very reliable. I have had it for under a year, I have approximately 10,000 miles on it, and I have not had a to do any repairs, except the normal maintenance of change the oil. When the tire air pressure is low, I light comes on in the vehicle to alert me to add air. How cool is that! The features are mostly the same as any other features in other cars in its class, so i'd say they are "nothing to write home about". It handles the road well (performance); picking up speed is about average. I do like the big windshield and big windshield wipers for those times you need added visibility in storms. The backseat is quite roomy. The hatchback is roomy as well.

2018 Fit is a Small Hatchback with a Big Personality.

My vehicle is a well performing car for the price. It isn't the fastest car but I consider it pretty reliable. I haven't had any problems so far with the car and I've owned it for a little over a year. The car has more space than you would think because of its small size. The back passengers have more leg room compared to other small compact hatchback cars. The car has a sunroof, is automatic, has 4 cup holders in the driver and passenger side. The car also has Apple Carplay which is a nice feature to have if you like listening to your own music from your phone. The screen in the car is touch screen also.

2018 Honda Fit is the perfect car for commuting and has great hands-free features.

It's a really great car, has been very reliable, runs smoothly and is perfect for someone like me who uses it to commute everyday. It doesn't guzzle gas which is nice, and you get a lot of mileage out of it. I like the Bluetooth connectivity which allows me to link my phone and play music on Spotify. Having the controls for that on the steering wheel is great too because I don't have to take my hands off the wheel to skip a song or adjust volume. Also able to answer incoming phone calls or set it up so that I can make calls using voice recognition without having to use my hands. I love my car!

Lots of perks in a little 2015 Honda Fit

The fit gets great gas mileage - 42-44 mpg in the summer, a little less in the winter (38 mpg). Handles really well in all weather conditions. I love that the seats configure in different ways and so far I have been able to move any large items that I have needed to move. The black interior gets a little warm in the summer, but the ac works great. One dislike - I live in a rural area, sometimes have to drive on gravel roads and the rear window tends to collect a lot of gravel dust. There is a rear wiper, but it does not remove the dust from the entire rear window.

2013 honda fit sport

Got mine for 9k at the time, with 93k miles. Idrive less than 6k a year. I have to say it was worth every penny, no issues whatsoever. I'm 6ft tall and had plenty of room. My only complaint isthe head rests are kind ofangled downward so if you are tall and need them fully extended it will feel 'off'. Otherwise she rooma-zoom-zooms. One of the fastest to accelerate vehicles I've owed and excellent sound system. Mine was automatic -trans. Handling is excellent. Really goes around those corners nicely without throwing you around.

Small but spacious 2009 Honda Fit!

My 2009 Honda fit is small but has large amount of room inside, enough for long legged peeps and those that like their space! The gas mileage is amazing, with about 35 to the gallon on Hwy. You can get into tight spaces, (not encouraging anything) runs smooth, and easy to handle. Honda is just a great car. The cons with Honda is that it is a light car so the wind can feel like it hurts the car harder than normal. At the end of the day, the Honda fit is definitely reliable and worth a try.

2008 Honda Fit not big enough for a family.

I would say this car is too small for me. If it were just me it would be fine. The back seat lays down all the way and the seats convert all the way up for cleaning. It does not speed up very fast at all, expect to get driven around a lot. I have had transmission issues in the past and hear it holds true for other fit owners as well. I enjoy the mileage and amount of money it takes to fill up the tank.

Perfect sized vehicle for parking in tight spaces.

It is the perfect car for fitting in small spaces and living in a big city. One of my concerns is that it is very light and is easily moved by the wind. My biggest qualm is the air conditioning. I took a 6 hour road trip once and being that the car is so small the ac only last a couple of hours. My husband and I were driving through desert and were miserable on the way to our destination and back home.

Regret purchasing the 2015 Fit.

I love the color and that it has reasonable gas mileage. I am frustrated with the expensive servicing it has required. I am annoyed that I was told it was bigger than it looks and would totally fit a bike-yeah no, it isn't and it doesn't. There is also a design flaw in that sharp turns toward the curb in parking will cause the bumper to scrape the pavement because it is such a low riding frame.

The only feature I do not like is the headlights. Does not have led headlights and the high beams are not strong enough. Reliability has been perfect. Car is fairly comfortable for a small car. Suspension is tight. Performance is adequate but this is not a fast car. Had huge cargo area and very functional seating that can be changed around easily to accommodate cargo.

I've been very pleased with my 2013 Honda Fit. The only problem was the recall for the airbag. I love how small and compact it is. I like that the backseats can drop down and extent the cargo space. I love the gas mileage. I don't like that people can see right into the trunk from the outside.

2019 Fit battery will not stay charged.

I had a 2009 Fit and loved it. Never a problem. So I was excited to get the 2019 model. What a pain this car is; and all due to one problem. If you don't drive it every 3-4 days the battery dies!

2015 Fit gets great gas mileage.

I like my car because I get great gas mileage out of my car. I like that I can use to it to fit my family and sometimes big purchases. The one thing I don't like my car is It's expensive to fix.

The 2010 Honda Fit gets great gas mileage on the highway, but bad abs system.

The abs system is awful. It just makes it difficult to break in the snow. The gas mileage is awful in the city but very good on the highway.
